Welcome! I’m Mesa, I write adult narrative nonfiction (and children’s books.) I’m represented by Sorche Fairbank at Fairbank Literary Representation.
I’ve been a science and medical illustrator for many years, and you can see some of that work (in textbooks and popular publishing, academic articles, games and puzzles, museums, zoos, and the pages of National Geographic) here: www.mesaschumacher.com. If you are interested in a scientific or medical collaboration please get in touch!
I’m an illustrator with a writing habit. Or perhaps just an illustrator who found images insufficient to tell all the stories she wanted to tell. Though I write across genre, my heart dwells in creative nonfiction. I was attendee of the 2025 Tin House Winter Workshop in nonfiction, and am working on a graphic novel pathography about living with the BRCA1 “breast cancer gene.”
